How Cover Co Helped The Merrywell with Durable and Stylish Outdoor Shading
The Merrywell is one of the most iconic spots at Crown Perth. The venue boasts a beer garden, the perfect selection of “pub grub” and an impressive range of drinks for every occasion – a bit of a hero in our eyes! Crown recently invested in updating the roofing structure to provide greater shade in summer, and to better provide cover on rainy winter days.
The importance of quality and ongoing maintenance
Prior to working with Cover Co, The Merrywell had enlisted other providers to install an outdoor shade with varying levels of success. A more reliable yet flexible system with benefits during peak summer and winter periods was now the requirement and that’s when we stepped in.
Navigating the complexities
Being our first project with Crown Perth, there were some important factors to establish for project success. We needed to ensure our team was working in harmony with the structure and multiple stakeholders involved. Through engagement with Crown, the collective aim of the project was to minimise impact on guests while the project was underway.
The covering needed to span approximately 250m² and we needed to be mindful of the business in the area. The Merrywell was still a highly sought-after spot, and Crown Perth received a high volume of traffic each and every day. Our team needed a plan that would minimise business impact as much as possible while still getting the job done. Away we went!
What we did need to keep in mind, however, was the ongoing maintenance expectations, regulation of safety and permit requirements. Cover Co was able to manage the project in its entirety, including uploading permit and safety requirements to the client’s internal system, all on-site processes and keeping in close communication with Crown management.
Setting The Merrywell up for success
We found an alternative solution that would rise to the occasion and provide the longevity needed for the space.
Our suggestion was automated aluminium operable louvres that fit the longevity requirements, were adaptable to the existing structure and still provided the style and practicality needed to help enhance the space. From an engineering perspective, this solution could be bolted directly to the existing steel subframe, keeping project costs down. Secondly, our the system chosen meant we could install the replacement without any roof pitch which fit the aesthetic whilst still meeting the draining requirements – a win win!

Perhaps most importantly for this project was the implementation of an ongoing maintenance plan for The Merrywell. While we were confident in our solution and the work completed, we’re proud of our focus on proactivity and looking ahead. The introduction of regular maintenance means The Merrywell can have full faith in Cover Co to keep their beer garden in working order – rain, hail or shine!
